Lanny Leroy Witter, passed away peacefully at his home on July 11, 2025, at the age of 82.
Lanny was born in Rochester, MN on July 1, 1943, the son of Edwin and Sylvia (Haggerty) Witter.
He went to a country grade school and Plainview High School; he attended Rochester Junior College and Winona State College graduating with a BA in Business. From 1963-1965 he served in the U.S. Army with a year of duty in South Korea.
Lanny married Marcelline (Marcy) Daniel October 2, 1965, at St. John's Church in Rochester, MN. They were blessed with two sons, Brian and Jeffrey.
In 1998 he retired from IBM Corporation with 32 years of service in Finance. He then worked at Rochester Technical Services, Celestica, Pemstar and First Student retiring in 2018.
He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Vietnam ERA Veterans of America Honor Guard, Korea Veterans Club, Mayflower Society, Olmsted County History Center, Oronoco History Center, IBM Alumni Club, Rochester Civil War Roundtable and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Volunteer service included serving on the Board of Directors of United Way Agency, IBM Credit Union (now Think Bank) and Veterans and Emergency Services Museum. He was an active member of Pax Christi Church serving as an usher, Chairman of the Finance Committee and as a volunteer for various events.
Interests included travel, genealogy and researching and presenting Civil War topics. He especially enjoyed family activities and vacations, time with his grandchildren, canoeing and camping in Northern Minnesota, golfing, biking, wood carving and woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Vonne, sister-in-law Dawn (Radke) Witter, brothers-in-law Larry Goetz, Will Ludwig, Royce Daniel, Chester Daniel and Bruce Daniel.
Lanny is survived by his wife Marcy, son Brian, daughter-in-love Michelle, son Jeffrey, grandchildren Amberlyn and Aaron. Also surviving are brothers, Elwood (Sue) of Rochester, Terry of Owatonna, sister Gail Goetz of Texas, sister Rita Ludwig of Iowa and extended family on both sides.
A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 3pm at Pax Christi Church (4135 - 18th Avenue NW) with a visitation at the church one hour prior to the service.
Lanny donated his remains to the Mayo Clinic for research in the hope that it will help prevent others from having to live with the debilitating and devastating life changes of glioblastoma. In lieu of flowers, consider donations to Channel One Regional Food Bank or Mayo Clinic for cancer research.
An inurnment with military rites will be held at a later date at the Oronoco Cemetery.
