It is with deep sadness, we announce the passing of Sonja Garness, 83, of Rochester, MN, who passed away at her home surrounded by loved ones on September 3, 2025. Sonja Elaine Engan was born February 14, 1942 in Spring Grove, Mn to Emil and Synneva (Grinland) Engan.
She was a wonderful mother who was always there when we needed her the most, offering support and love in abundance. Sonja leaves behind her children Jon Garness of Rochester, MN and Dana Novak (Jeff) of Minneapolis, MN; and her beloved grandchildren, Emily, and Jackson.
Sonja was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Garness.
A celebration of Sonja's life will be held from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Friday, September 12, at the Rochester Eagles Club. A small burial service for family and close friends will take place at Big Canoe cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to www.mayoclinic.org for ocular carcinoma research. Online condolences are welcome and may be shared at maxonfamilycremation.com.
