Steve Allen Poplow, age 71, died in Rochester, MN, on September 27, 2026.
Born on October 7, 1954, in New Richland, MN, to Lloyd and Gladys Poplow.
Steve spent his early years on a farm in New Richland before moving to Butterfield in 1955, where he built a life rich in family, friends, and community. He was a proud graduate of Butterfield-Odin School and continued his education at The University of Minnesota Agricultural College in Waseca. A talented athlete, he made a name for himself as a champion wrestler and football star during his school years. His love of challenges carried on into his later pursuits, where he excelled in swimming and even joined the Rescue/Recovery Scuba Diving Squad.
In February 1976, Steve married Donna Schmidt, and together they raised a family. They later divorced in 2005. Proud father to April and Allen Poplow, Steve found immense joy in his role as a grandfather. His relationships with his grandchildren-Gavin, Victoria, Manuel, Allen Jr., and Ariel-were profoundly cherished, and he dedicated much of his later years to making lasting memories with them.
Steve's career was marked by hard work and dedication. He spent many years in custom manufacturing and welding at Balzer in Mountain Lake, MN, and was known for his personal business, Poplow's Custom Welding. He was a reliable fixture in the farming community, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, whether they were friends, neighbors, or travelers passing through.
Beyond his work, Steve embraced life with a spirit of adventure. He loved hunting and fishing, often retreating with friends and family to the beautiful landscapes of Brainerd, MN and South Dakota (Missouri River). Camping/4-Wheeling (ATV) up north Trips at Spider Lake, watching the Minnesota Vikings, trap shooting champion, he proudly displayed many trophies. His famous fish fries were a highlight among family gatherings and Monday nights were reserved for watching pro wrestling with the kids.
Steve was a dedicated member of the First Lutheran Church in Butterfield, actively serving on the church council and contributing to his community. He supported numerous charitable organizations, notably Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever, reflecting his love for nature and the outdoors.
Steve is predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Gladys; his sister, Myra Connolley, and several beloved family members.
He is survived by his daughter, April Poplow; son, Allen Poplow; grandchildren, Gavin, Victoria, Manuel, Allen Jr., Ariel, and many nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.
Per my Steve's wishes he asked not to have a funeral upon his immediate passing; however, a Celebration of Life will take place in the Summer of 2027. Updates and announcements will be given when arrangements have been finalized.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Steve's honor to Ducks Unlimited or Pheasants Forever.
