Virgil Adolph Andrist

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Virgil A. Andrist, (aka-papa, grandpa, dad, Grinch, squeaky, Virg, and "the better half"), at age 78, passed away on August 28, 2026, at 12:45 am, in his home, surrounded by those who loved and respected him deeply. In true Virgil fashion he got the last one in on his granddaughters. As they laid by his side, he patiently waited for both of them to fall asleep before he left to join his family and friends. He was not sure if he was going to heaven or hell. He thought maybe he would start in heaven, and there was a good possibility, "I would get kicked out." Virgil was born on September 20, 1947 to Verona Andrist (Skrogen) and Otto Andrist, in New Haven Township, located just outside of Pine Island.

He attended Pine Island High School until he was kicked out. He later completed his GED and earned a degree in Auto Body Mechanics in 1967. He married Carol Andrist, the love of his life on November 4th, 1966 and together had 2 sons and one beautiful daughter. He was drafted into the United States Army in June of 1971, and stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts until his honorable discharge in April of 1973. Virgil worked as a heavy equipment operator for most of his career and did body work on the side.

Virgil was not afraid to tell you what he was thinking and would not , "beat around the bush,", he was quick witted, and had a sense of humor that would make anyone laugh. After losing his leg last year he would greet people by waving his stub at them. He was an advice giver and if you needed to know ANYTHING, just ask him because he always had an answer. Virgil had a tender side to him that not everyone was able to experience but his family felt this every time they were with him and he would give you a "squirrely hug." He always said I love you. Time spent with his wife, kids, and grandkids was the most important thing to him. If he didn't see anyone for a day he would say, "aren't you going to come see your poor, old, aging dad (or grandpa)," He will be missed dearly.

Virgil is leaving behind the most amazing wife, Carol Andrist. He also leaves behind his partner in crime, son Troy Andrist ( grandkids; Ambra Andrist and Jaden Abbott), his loving daughter Jessica (Charlie) Bradford (grandkids; Hunter and Chloe Bradford), and son Chad (Katie) Andrist (grandkids; Ava and Everett). Virgil also leaves behind siblings Dave (Mary) Andrist, Darold (Kim) Andrist, and Rosie Andrist, and Kathy (Robert) Krause.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents Otto and Verona Andrist, his siblings Otto Andrist Jr, Ronald Andrist, Arland Andrist, Joseph Andrist, Shirley McWaters, Kenneth (Barb) Andrist, and Betty (Wilbar) Stanfuss. 

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 4th, 2026 from 3-7 pm, at 60126 240th Avenue, Mantorville, MN 55955.
